Introduction
Earlier this year we completed a large 12kW solar PV and battery installation project for a domestic customer in Chester, Cheshire. The project took place in a beautifully converted barn, where the client wanted to improve energy efficiency and decrease reliance on the grid. Our goal was to design and install a renewable energy system that not only fulfilled the client’s energy requirements but also maintained the property’s visual appeal.
Methodology
The project began with a detailed survey of the converted barn to assess the structural integrity and suitability for solar panel installation. This survey was then used to design a bespoke solution tailored to the client’s specific requirements. After a thorough examination, we recommended the installation of 32 Canadian Solar all-black 375-watt panels. These panels were chosen for their high efficiency, aesthetic appeal, and long-term reliability, featuring a black backsheet and frame for a modern look. To enhance the appearance, we opted to install the panels flush with the roof using a GSE integration system.
Installation
Our team installed the 32 Canadian Solar panels, forming an impressive 12kW solar array. The use of High-efficiency mono PERC cells ensured maximum energy production, and the panels come with a 25-year linear power output warranty, ensuring long term performance.
To complement the solar array, we incorporated the latest technology from GivEnergy. An 11kW 3-phase GivEnergy hybrid inverter was installed, integrating the solar PV system with the home’s existing electrical system. This inverter not only manages the energy flow between the solar panels, battery, and home but also provides an automatic backup in the event of a power cut, with a fast 20ms switch time.
A crucial component of the system was the GivEnergy 20.4 kWh stackable battery. Utilising six high-capacity, energy-dense LiFePO4 cells, this battery setup offers robust storage capacity. The system allows for charging the battery with solar or the grid during off-peak hours, and then discharging during peak times to maximise energy savings.
Outcome
Upon completion, we thoroughly tested everything to ensure optimal performance. The homeowner was delighted with the results, noting not only the efficiency and reliability of the system but also its seamless integration with the property’s aesthetics. The flush-mounted, all-black panels provided a polished, modern look, while the advanced battery and inverter technology delivered significant energy savings and enhanced energy security.
