Solar Power Extension and Battery Storage for a Modern Denbighshire Home

How JM Renewable Solutions fitted a garage-mounted solar array and two Tesla Powerwall 3 batteries to a modern detached property in the village of Llanrhaeadr, giving the homeowner a fast payback and greater energy independence.

MEET THE HOMEOWNER

Mr Watkin lives in a modern home on a newer development in the village of Llanrhaeadr, near Denbigh.

“We’d already seen the benefits from our existing solar system, so the garage roof felt like an obvious next step. Adding more panels there, along with batteries to capture more of the energy we’re generating, meant we could make the most of that roof space and bring our bills down even further.” Like many homeowners exploring solar for the first time, Mr Watkin wanted to understand exactly what his roof could deliver before committing.”

THE BRIEF

JM Renewables carried out a full technical assessment of the property, to design a system suited to the home. The detached garage roof was identified as the best location for the array, offering more usable space than the main house roof.

“We decided to install 8 panels on the garage to maximise our properties renewable potential. We then decided to install two Tesla batteries to store cheap green electricity and any excess I can be sold back to the grid!”

THE SOLUTION

Based on the survey, JM Renewables designed and installed a complete solar and storage system on the garage roof:

4.5kW Solar Array

8 x 450W Trina Vertex solar panels, arranged across two rows on the garage roof

3.6kW Solis single-phase inverter

GSE in-roof mounting kit

Estimated annual generation of 3,300kWh in year one

Tesla Powerwall 3 Battery Storage

2 x 13.5kWh Tesla Powerwall 3 with gateway

Stored surplus solar generation during the day for use in the evening and overnight

Reduces reliance on grid electricity at peak-rate times

INSTALL REVIEW

“The team from JM Renewables were good from the start working through ideas and installed the system promptly on the days scheduled. The solar panel installation by Glyn went smoothly and then  Gareth and Dylan came to install batteries. Their work was excellent and very tidy. Looking forward to seeing how well the system works.”

25-YEAR FINANCIAL PROJECTION

The full generation and saving projection for the installed 3.6 kW system is set out below.

YearEstimated Annual Generation (kWh)Elec. Cost (p/kWh)Annual Saving*
14,1430.250£1,036
54,0530.304£1,231
103,9420.388£1,529
153,8350.495£1,898
203,7310.632£2,357
253,6290.806£2,926

Total financial benefit over 25 years: £45,674. This does NOT include this additional savings from the two Tesla Powerwall Batteries.

Together with the two Tesla Powerwall 3 batteries, the system also cuts down how much of that generation Mr Watkin needs to export or waste, by storing surplus daytime solar for use once the sun goes down.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

The installation saves approximately 1.08 tonnes of CO2 annually, an equivalent to planting 49 trees every year.

“Knowing we’re cutting over a tonne of CO2 every year, and that’s on top of what our first system already saves, makes the investment feel worthwhile beyond just the bill savings.”

PEACE OF MIND

The system is backed by:

25-year warranty on the PV panels

30-year linear performance warranty

10-year warranty on the mounting system

10-year guarantee on JM Renewables’ workmanship

5-year inverter warranty

10-year warranty on the x2 Tesla Powerwall 3 batteries
