Introduction
Ysgol Cynfran, a community school located on the picturesque coastline of Conwy in North Wales, recently sought to enhance its commitment to sustainability by expanding its solar capabilities. The school already benefits from a solar PV array comprising of 32 panels but aims to generate more electricity to support its future energy needs. The JM Renewables team were approached to assist with this expansion, aligning with the school’s vision of becoming more energy-independent and environmentally conscious.
Methodology
To determine the most effective solution for Ysgol Cynfran, our team conducted a thorough analysis of the existing solar setup and the available roof space. This evaluation was crucial to ensuring that the new system would be optimised for maximum efficiency and integrated with the existing infrastructure. After careful consideration, we designed a system incorporating 21 high-efficiency 420W panels, capable of producing an additional 8.82kW of power. This design not only maximised the use of available space but also ensured the new system complemented the school’s existing solar array.
Installation
The installation process was carefully planned to minimise disruption to the school’s daily operations. We opted to carry out the installation outside school hours, ensuring that the activities of both staff and pupils remained unaffected. The 21 new panels were mounted on rails on the south-facing roof, chosen for its excellent sun exposure. Each panel was securely fixed and then connected to the school’s electrical system via an inverter. This inverter plays a critical role in converting the direct current (DC) produced by the solar panels into alternating current (AC), which can be used by the school’s electrics. A comprehensive testing phase followed the installation, during which all components were carefully checked.
Outcome
The newly installed solar panels at Ysgol Cynfran are projected to generate approximately 7,850kWh of electricity annually. This significant increase in renewable energy production is estimated to save 1.52 tonnes of CO2 each year, which is equivalent to planting around 70 trees annually. This enhancement not only advances the school’s energy independence but also contributes substantially to environmental conservation efforts. By embracing solar energy, Ysgol Cynfran is setting an excellent example for its students, encouraging a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibulity. Both the new and existing solar systems collectively empower the school to reduce its carbon footprint, lower energy costs, and educate future generations about the importance of renewable energy.
