90kW Solar PV & Heat Pump Installation for Fleetwood Nautical Campus

Introduction

We recently completed a commercial renewable energy project at the Fleetwood Nautical Campus in Blackpool. This prestigious facility, home to one of the largest environmental training pools in the UK, provides vital safety, survival, fire, and first aid training to the Merchant Navy. The objective of the project was to integrate an energy-efficient system that would reduce carbon emissions and operational costs. Working closely with Fleetwood’s team, we designed and implemented a comprehensive renewable energy solution consisting of a solar panel array and a dual commercial air source heat pumps.

Methodology

Following a thorough site survey and energy assessment, we identified the most effective combination of renewable technologies for the building. Our recommendation was to install a 90kW solar power array, comprising 211 Trina Solar panels, alongside two 18kW Air Source Heat Pumps by Global Energy Systems. These heat pumps were specifically chosen for their suitability to the UK climate, with a robust design capable of operating efficiently in temperatures as low as -20°C. Additionally, they feature a high-mounted evaporator to mitigate cold air recirculation, ensuring optimal performance in all weather conditions.

Installation

Our in-house installation team mounted the 211 Trina Solar panels onto the metal roof of the building, maximising the available space. Due to the pitched structure, the two halves of the array were fixed at different angles. To counteract potential performance disparities caused by shading and orientation, we installed SolarEdge Power Optimisers. These devices track and modulate the performance of the panels, mitigating inefficiencies and maximising overall system output. The panels were then wired back to internal inverters, where the generated electricity was converted for use within the facility.

In parallel, we installed the two 18kW Air Source Heat Pumps and connected them to the campus plant room. To enhance system efficiency and ensure a steady supply of heated water, a 300L buffer tank was also incorporated. Following the installation, we conducted rigorous commissioning tests, ensuring the system met all safety and performance standards. The final stage included a comprehensive sign-off process with all relevant documentation provided.

Outcome

With the successful implementation of these cutting-edge renewable energy systems, Fleetwood Nautical Campus now benefits from significantly improved energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. The integrated solar and heat pump solution is expected to deliver substantial long-term cost savings, enhancing the facility’s sustainability.
