Introduction
Located just outside Wrexham, this rural solar panel installation involved installing an energy system to an agricultural shed. The property owner sought to reduce electricity costs, increase energy resilience, and harness renewable energy by installing a robust solar PV system with battery storage. The challenge was to design a system that could supply power to the nearby house, capable of operating independently of the grid during outages.
Methodology
Our team began with a detailed site assessment of the shed and surrounding infrastructure. We examined the roof orientation, pitch, and structural integrity to ensure safe and efficient solar panel mounting. After confirming suitability, we designed a bespoke solar solution consisting of 14 high-efficiency 440w solar PV panels, paired with a GivEnergy hybrid inverter and a modular 13.5kWh battery storage system. The goal was to maximise energy capture and storage, allowing the client to utilise solar energy during the day and stored power during peak evening hours or grid failures.
Installation
The solar panels were mounted securely on a rail system fixed to the metal roof of the agricultural shed, ensuring stability and optimal exposure to sunlight. Power cables were routed cleanly and discreetly to the interior, where the GivEnergy inverter and modular battery storage system were installed. The battery system’s modular design with four removable packs made handling safer and more efficient. A dedicated cable was laid to feed power from the shed to the main house. The system was configured to top up the battery during off-peak, low-carbon periods and discharge during peak usage times for maximum cost efficiency. The inverter also enables full off-grid functionality in the event of a power outage.
Outcome
The completed installation delivered immediate energy savings and increased the property’s energy independence. The system is expected to generate approximately 5,069kWh of clean solar energy annually, leading to a reduction of around 980.19kg in CO₂ emissions each year, which is the equivalent of planting 45 trees annually. The intelligent battery ensures peak-time efficiency and long-term financial savings.
