5kW Air Source Heat Pump Installation, Abergele

Introduction

In a recent renewable energy project, we successfully installed a 5kW Mitsubishi Air Source Heat Pump in a domestic property located in Abergele, a town on the north coast of Wales, between Colwyn Bay and Rhyl. This project involved replacing an outdated, inefficient gas boiler with a more sustainable, low-carbon heating system, in line with the UK’s push towards greener energy solutions. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) made the installation possible, with a significant grant making the switch to renewable energy more affordable.

Methodology

The installation process began with a detailed assessment of the customer’s heating needs. Since the property had modest heating requirements, we selected the 5kW Mitsubishi Ecodan Compact Air Source Heat Pump. This model was chosen for its excellent energy efficiency, advanced R32 refrigerant technology, and stylish design, all of which are ideal for domestic properties. The unit operates as a single-fan, outdoor monobloc system known for its compact form and ability to provide efficient heating with minimal environmental impact.

We paired the heat pump with a Mitsubishi Pre-plumbed 150-litre slimline cylinder. This cylinder, complete with integrated hydraulic components and advanced controls, was ideal for the installation, particularly as it was pre-plumbed and wired, which significantly reduced the time required for the installation process.

Installation

The installation took place in the attic of the customer’s bungalow, where the slimline cylinder was fitted. The compact design allowed for easy accommodation in this space, with pipework neatly routed back to the home’s existing central heating and hot water systems. Our skilled team worked efficiently, ensuring that all connections were secure and that the system was fully integrated.

Once the installation was complete, we carried out thorough testing to ensure the system was working efficiently. The homeowner was delighted with the outcome, praising the quality of workmanship and the installation team’s professionalism.

Funding

The customer was eligible for a £7,500 grant from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), which is aimed at encouraging the adoption of renewable heating technologies by providing financial assistance. The scheme is specifically designed for homeowners looking to replace fossil fuel heating systems, such as gas or oil boilers, with more sustainable alternatives like heat pumps. Without this funding, the upfront costs of installing low-carbon technologies can be prohibitively expensive for many homeowners.

Outcome

The installation of the 5kW Mitsubishi Air Source Heat Pump resulted in a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly heating solution for the customer. The system significantly reduced the property’s carbon footprint and provided reliable heating at a lower operational cost. The homeowner was very happy with both the system’s performance and the quality of service provided by our team. This project highlights the effectiveness of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in making renewable heating technologies more accessible to UK homeowners, particularly in regions like Denbighshire.
