Introduction
Our team recently completed a significant solar panel installation project at Ysgol y Creuddyn, a Welsh-medium secondary school located in Penrhyn Bay, Conwy. The school, with over 600 bilingual students, teaches all subjects in the Welsh language. This project aligns with the school’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint while also providing substantial savings on electricity.
Methodology
The installation was meticulously planned to ensure minimal disruption to the school’s daily operations. Initial assessments involved detailed site surveys to identify the most suitable rooftops for solar PV installation. Factors considered included the orientation to the sun, structural integrity, and ease of access. Our team coordinated with the school to schedule the installation during non-school hours, ensuring classes were unaffected.
Installation
We installed a total of 442 high-efficiency 435W solar panels across seven arrays on five different rooftops. These panels were strategically placed to maximise sun exposure and energy production. The installation process involved securely mounting the panels to rails on the rooftops, ensuring stability and optimal positioning. Following the mounting, the panels were wired back to the school’s electrical system. Inverters were installed to convert the generated solar power into usable electricity for the school.
Outcome
The completed solar system boasts a total capacity of 187.85kW, capable of producing approximately 159,710kWh of electricity annually. This impressive output converts into estimated annual savings of £48,000 in electricity costs for the school. The environmental benefits are also significant, with an estimated annual CO2 emissions reduction of 30.89 tonnes. This reduction is equivalent to planting 1,419 trees each year, highlighting the project’s positive impact on the environment.
In conclusion, the solar panel installation at Ysgol y Creuddyn demonstrates the practical and environmental benefits of renewable energy solutions in the public sector. The project not only provides financial savings but also serves as a valuable educational tool, showcasing the importance of sustainability to students and the community.
