170kW Solar PV Installation, Ysgol y Graig

Introduction

Our team recently completed a significant project of installing 440 solar PV panels for Ysgol y Graig, a Net Zero Carbon school extension located in Llangefni, Isle of Anglesey. The construction of this Foundation Phase building began in early 2023 and promises not only expanded capacity but also a commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. The large solar array, with 825m2 of photovoltaic panels, signifies a bold step towards renewable energy generation. With an impressive capability to produce 170kW of clean electricity, this installation sets a precedent for sustainable schools in the future.

Methodology

Our approach to designing and installing the solar panel system for Ysgol y Graig was carefully designed to ensure maximum efficiency and performance. The cornerstone of our methodology was the selection of high-quality components renowned for their reliability and efficacy. We opted for 448 x 380watt Trina solar panels, known for their excellent efficiency in converting sunlight into electricity. Complementing these panels, we integrated SolarEdge power optimisers into the system. These intelligent devices monitor each pair of panels, mitigating the impact of underperformance and eliminating potential power losses due to output mismatches. Such a comprehensive approach guarantees optimal energy production and enhances the entire system’s longevity and resilience.

Installation

The installation process for the solar panel system at Ysgol y Graig went smoothly, working alongside other contractors on the building site. Our in-house engineers adhered to stringent standards to ensure seamless integration with the school’s energy infrastructure. Given the significance of the project, meticulous planning and coordination were paramount. Careful attention was paid to factors such as panel orientation, shading analysis, and structural integrity of the flat roof to maximise the system’s performance. Throughout the installation process, adherence to safety protocols and quality standards remained paramount, ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of the system.

Outcome

The completion of the solar panel installation marks a key moment in Ysgol y Graig’s journey towards sustainability and energy independence. With the system projected to generate approximately 134,000kWh of electricity annually, the school is poised to reap significant financial and environmental benefits. Not only will this abundance of clean energy reduce the school’s carbon footprint by an estimated 25 tonnes per year, but it will also alleviate the burden of electricity costs, providing long-term savings. The integration of cutting-edge technology, including Trina solar panels and SolarEdge power optimisers, ensures optimal performance and resilience, guaranteeing reliable energy production for years to come.

As Ysgol y Graig opens its doors later this year, it does so with the assurance of sustainability, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to a greener future.
