Introduction
Our team recently delivered a 28kW solar PV installation at Ysgol Cerrigydrudion, a Welsh medium school serving the rural community of Uwchaled in Conwy, North Wales. Like many educational establishments across North Wales, the school faced rising electricity costs and a growing need to demonstrate meaningful action towards sustainability. The Headteacher’s goal was clear: reduce energy bills, cut carbon emissions, and adopt a long-term renewable energy solution that supports both the school’s operations and its environmental values.
With safety, efficiency, and minimal disruption as priorities, we planned and installed a solar panel system that maximised roof potential while delivering reliable, clean energy generation year-round.
Methodology
Before any installation work began, our in-house solar design team conducted a detailed site survey and roof assessment across the school buildings. This evaluation included checking orientation, shading risks, available mounting areas, and structural suitability to ensure a safe, high-performing solution.
Following the assessment, we recommended a 28.48kW solar PV system comprising 63 high-efficiency 445W solar panels. We split the system into two separate arrays, each using robust mounting rails on the pitched roof rather than the flat roof, ensuring secure fixing, improved weather resistance, and better overall performance.
A clear project plan was then agreed upon, including safe access arrangements, installation scheduling, and commissioning requirements to align with industry standards.
Installation
To maintain a safe environment and avoid disruption to staff and pupils, the solar panel installation was scheduled when the school was closed. This approach enabled our team to work efficiently while keeping the site secure and fully compliant with health and safety.
The solar panels were installed on both sides of the pitched roof using heavy-duty rails and fixings designed for stability and longevity. Once installed, the panels were electrically connected to the school’s existing electrical infrastructure, ensuring seamless integration.
After all components were fitted, we completed full commissioning and system testing. This included performance checks and safety verification to confirm that the solar PV system was operating correctly and efficiently, and was ready to deliver consistent renewable electricity generation from the start.
Outcome
The completed solar PV system at Ysgol Cerrigydrudion is expected to generate approximately 25.47MWh of solar energy annually, delivering an estimated £6,367.50 reduction in annual electricity costs. The environmental impact is equally impressive, with predicted annual savings of around 4.93 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to planting approximately 226 trees.
Most importantly, the school now benefits from a reliable long-term renewable energy solution that reduces operating costs while reinforcing sustainability values. The project supports cleaner energy use today and helps inspire pupils to learn about climate responsibility for the future.
