43kW Solar PV Installation for Ysgol Bro Aled

Introduction

The JM Renewables team recently completed a solar PV installation at Ysgol Bro Aled, a bilingual primary school located in Llansannan, Conwy. Serving around 100 pupils aged three to eleven, the school is known for its progressive approach to education and sustainability. The project focused on increasing the school’s use of renewable energy to help meet Conwy Council’s carbon reduction goals. With rising energy costs and an ageing 6-panel solar system installed in 2013, the challenge was to deliver a cutting-edge solar solution that aligned with planned roof replacement.

Methodology

Our in-house team began by carrying out a full site survey and roof assessment to evaluate structural suitability, orientation, shading and energy demand. As the existing felt roof was old and required replacement, this created an opportunity to integrate a high-efficiency solar PV system directly into the new roofing structure. Using performance modelling tools, we designed a bespoke 42.72kW system comprising ninety six solar panels. System design also accounted for electrical integration, monitoring access and long term maintenance requirements.

Installation

The installation was carefully scheduled outside school hours to minimise disruption and ensure pupil safety. As the roof replacement was completed in-house by our team, we removed the old felt roof and installed the ninety six 445W solar panels flush using a GSE in roof mounting system, finishing the surrounding areas with new roof tiles to deliver a seamless, visually appealing finish within the pitched roof. Panels were divided into two arrays and connected to a central inverter, enabling real time performance monitoring. As part of the wider roof upgrade, six light tubes were also installed to redirect natural daylight into internal spaces, reducing reliance on artificial lighting. Following installation, our engineers completed comprehensive electrical testing and system commissioning to confirm optimal performance.

Outcome

The completed solar PV system at Ysgol Bro Aled is expected to generate approximately 38.28MWh of renewable electricity each year. This will offset around 7.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to planting approximately 340 trees. Financially, the school is forecast to save around £9,570 per year on energy costs, providing protection against future price rises and delivering long term value. The project supports the school’s sustainability ethos while creating educational opportunities around renewable energy. The headteacher was delighted with the quality of the installation, the minimal disruption, and the clear environmental benefits.
