Introduction
We recently delivered a 19.58kW solar PV installation in Pentrefoelas, Conwy, for Ysgol Pentrefoelas, a community primary school serving children aged 3 to 11. Located in the rural village of Pentrefoelas in North Wales, the school wanted to reduce its rising electricity costs while strengthening its commitment to sustainability.
With energy prices continuing to impact public sector budgets, the school needed a reliable renewable energy solution that would provide long term savings and measurable environmental benefits. Our brief was clear: design and install an efficient commercial PV system that maximises solar generation and delivers strong financial returns.
Methodology
Our in-house design team conducted a comprehensive on-site solar survey to assess roof suitability, structural integrity, and solar orientation. Careful analysis confirmed that the largest roof, facing south west, offered optimal conditions for a high-yield solar PV system.
Detailed measurements identified that there would be space for 44 solar panels arranged in a combination of vertical and horizontal orientations. We designed a bespoke system, supported by performance modelling software, to forecast annual energy generation, electricity cost savings, and carbon reduction.
The design process also included planning cable routing, selecting appropriate mounting systems for the slate roof, and choosing an inverter to ensure efficient energy conversion. Risk assessments and access planning were completed to ensure a safe and compliant installation within this educational environment.
Installation
To avoid disruption to pupils and staff, installation was scheduled when the school was closed. Our MCS accredited solar installers mounted 44 high efficiency solar panels using a secure aluminium rail system designed specifically for slate roofing.
The array was installed with precision to ensure optimal alignment and long term durability. DC cabling was routed across a short flat roof section before entering the building, where it was internally connected to the plant room and integrated into the school’s existing electrical systems.
All electrical connections were completed in accordance with current UK regulations. The system underwent full testing and commissioning to verify performance, safety and compliance. Final documentation and certification were issued to formally sign off on the commercial solar PV installation.
Outcome
The completed system delivers a total installed capacity of 19.58kW DC and is projected to generate approximately 21.10MWh of electricity annually. This renewable energy output is expected to save the school around £5,275 per year on electricity costs, providing significant long term financial benefit.
In environmental terms, the installation will reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 4.08 tonnes of CO2 annually, equivalent to planting 187 trees. Beyond cost savings, the solar panel system also serves as an educational resource, helping pupils understand the importance of renewable energy and climate responsibility.
This successful solar PV installation in Pentrefoelas demonstrates how schools across Conwy and North Wales can benefit from commercial solar solutions. Contact our team today to discuss your solar panel installation project or visit our solar installation page to learn more.
