9kW Solar PV & Battery Storage Installation, Guernsey

Introduction

In a first for JM Renewables, we headed over to Guernsey, Channel Islands for an installation on a property. The homeowners were undertaking a significant renovation and wanted to incorporate renewable energy as part of the build rather than retrofitting it later.

While a typical domestic installation would usually consist of a 4 kW system using around 10 solar panels, which is more than sufficient to power the average home, this project had higher energy demands and a clear focus on long-term efficiency, aesthetics, and energy independence.

The Renewable Solution

Because the property was at the appropriate stage of renovation, JM Renewables was able to specify an in-roof solar PV system, allowing the panels to be fully integrated into the roof structure. This approach replaced a section of traditional roof slates, helping to reduce overall roofing costs while delivering a clean, modern, and minimal finish.

The system comprises 20 high-performance solar panels, providing a total capacity of 8.9 kW, almost double the size of a standard domestic installation. To further increase self-consumption and energy resilience, a Tesla Powerwall battery will be installed, enabling excess solar energy generated during the day to be stored and used during the evening or at times of low generation.

Panel placement and system design were optimised to maximise solar yield throughout the year, ensuring strong performance and long-term value.

Customer Benefits

The completed system is expected to deliver approximately £3,000 worth of free electricity each year. Based on current energy prices, the system is expected to recover its installation cost within 4 – 5 years through electricity bill savings.

Key benefits include:

  • Higher energy output compared to a standard 4 kW domestic system
  • Reduced roofing costs by replacing traditional roof slates
  • A sleek, fully integrated solar roof with a minimal visual impact
  • Increased energy independence through battery storage
  • Lower carbon footprint and long-term cost savings

This project demonstrates how integrating solar PV during a renovation can deliver both financial and aesthetic advantages, while providing a future-ready renewable energy solution.
