Introduction
Earlier this year, our team completed a renewable energy installation in Y Felinheli, a picturesque village on the Menai Strait between Bangor and Caernarfon in Gwynedd, North West Wales. The project involved the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a solar photovoltaic system, battery storage solution and air source heat pump, providing the homeowner with a complete low carbon energy system.
The client wanted to move away from traditional energy sources and invest in a more sustainable, energy-efficient solution that would reduce running costs while improving long-term energy independence. By combining solar PV panels, battery storage and an air source heat pump, we were able to deliver an integrated renewable energy system designed to maximise self-consumption, lower carbon emissions and provide an excellent return on investment.
Methodology
The project began with an in-depth consultation and a comprehensive assessment of the property to determine the most suitable renewable energy solution. Following the survey, the homeowner approved the installation of a 6.23kW solar PV system comprising fourteen 450W Trina Vertex solar panels, supported by a Sigenergy 10kWh battery and 6kW Mitsubishi air source heat pump.
Our design team carefully evaluated the property’s orientation, roof space and energy consumption to create a bespoke system tailored to the household’s requirements. Particular attention was given to balancing energy generation with storage capacity, ensuring that excess electricity generated during daylight hours could be stored and used when required. This detailed planning stage ensured every component would work seamlessly together to deliver maximum efficiency and long term performance.
Installation
The installation commenced with the fitting of fourteen 450W Trina Vertex solar panels to the property’s south-easterly facing pitched roof, allowing the system to capture excellent levels of sunlight throughout the day. The panels were connected to a 6kW Sigenergy inverter, which converts the electricity generated by the solar panels from DC to AC while intelligently managing the overall system.
The inverter was paired with a Sigenergy 10kWh battery, installed externally thanks to its robust IP66 rated enclosure. This allows surplus solar energy generated during the day to be stored for use in the evening or during periods of low generation, helping reduce reliance on the National Grid.
To complete the renewable heating system, we also installed a 6kW Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump on an external wall. Inside the property, a new 150-litre hot water cylinder was fitted to meet the household’s daily hot water requirements. We also upgraded seven radiators with models suited to heat pumps, ensuring efficient heat distribution throughout the home. Together, the solar PV system and battery storage help power the heat pump, increasing the property’s overall self-sufficiency.
Outcome
The completed renewable energy system is expected to achieve a peak output of 6kW and generate approximately 7,353kWh of electricity each year. Annual carbon dioxide savings are estimated at 1.42 tonnes, equivalent to planting around 63 trees each year. Alongside significantly reducing energy costs, the system provides the homeowner with greater energy independence and improved year round comfort.
The homeowner was delighted with the quality of workmanship, the smooth installation process and the immediate improvements delivered by the JM Renewables team. For additional peace of mind, the installation is supported by a 25-year warranty on the solar panels, a 10-year workmanship guarantee and a 10-year battery warranty.
