Homeowners renovate an old derelict farm building and transform it into a highly efficient, sustainable modern home/ holiday cottage. Air source

The Background- Air Source

Tyn Lyan is a beautiful self-build property in Llanfwrog, on the Isle of Anglesey (North Wales). Homeowners, Carol and Barry Coates have completely renovated a formally used farm building and transformed it into their ideal 5-bedroom home. The property will also be used as a bed & breakfast for travelling guests. Tyn Lyan is perfectly located for exploring the vast countryside, with its multiple walk paths and scenic Welsh coastline, it really is a rural retreat ideal to escape the hustle and bustle of 21st century life.

In addition to its stunning views of the surrounding environment, it also benefits from the most sustainable of heating systems, negating the challenges posed by its off-grid situation. Prior to installation, owners Carol and Barry had conducted some background research into alternative renewable heating systems, as they were well aware of the increasing prices of oil & lpg heating. Coupled with a genuine desire to make their home more environmentally friendly, they decided that an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) may be the green solution they were looking for, to provide adequate space heating and hot water for th entire whole property.

Moving forward, the owners contacted JM Renewable Solutions Ltd of Bodelwyddan to conduct a site survey and consult. JM Renewable Solutions then produced a consultancy report, which provided a full specification of the ASHP unit required, accompanied by a mechanical & electrical specification. After careful planning and continuous liaising with the homeowners, JM Renewable Solutions installed a 16 KW NIBE ASHP, along with full mechanical (underfloor heating, radiators, plumbing) and electrics. The ASHP has saved Carol and Barry over 50% on their annual heating bill in comparison to oil or lpg and they will receive the maximum renewable heat incentive (RHI) payments of £1500 per annum over 7 years.

Solution

“Carol and Barry had obviously done their homework when it came to looking at renewable heating systems, it was a case of collaboratively assessing the feasibility of the various options available and reviewing what was best for the homeowners before making a final decision. I recommended the NIBE product, as we have a large portfolio of successful NIBE installs to our name. The team and myself have been really impressed with the quality and reliability of their products. “This was a retro fit project during which a few challenges had to be overcome, however the compact nature of the NIBE ASHP and the complementary indoor module system to provide hot water for the property, allowed the old hot water cylinder to be removed creating more space for guests using the holiday cottage.” Ben Musgrave, Technical Director.

The project required the installation of a NIBE F2040 – 16kw ASHP with a 300L hot water cylinder. The latter benefited from an integrated buffer tank for the heating system, climate controlled automatic flow line temperature which considered the outdoor temperature and was self-regulating and speed controlled giving the homeowner and users peace of mind and reliability. The new pump was connected to the new underfloor heating & radiators throughout the property.

Air Source Heat Pumps work by absorbing heat from the outside air. This can be extracted from outside air temperatures as low as -20°C. The heat from the air is absorbed into a fluid which is then passed through a compressor, its temperature increased which is then passed into the heating and hot water circuits of the property. In Tyn Llan, the solution was an Air-to-Water system, which was distributing heat through a wet central heating system.

Results

JM Renewable Solutions, a NIBE VIP installer, was able to work closely with Carol and Barry through the entire process ensuring a smooth installation with minimal disruption and now the company will offer maintenance support with annual servicing.

The NIBE F2040 Air Source Heat Pump not only fulfilled Carol and Barry’s aim of using sustainable energy but will also see significant energy bill reductions and RHI payments. The energy rating of the property has increased as a result and will be a draw for holiday makers looking for a staycation home which supports sustainability and energy conservation.

This particular pump is also available in 8kW,12kW and 16kW all of which enjoy an A*** energy rating. The units are sited on the exterior of properties and their compact nature ensures they are unobtrusive as possible.
