Introduction
CMP Properties asked us to conduct a large-scale solar installation on the roof of their commercial unit at Lowton Enterprise Park in Warrington, Cheshire. The project aimed to harness the untapped potential of the extensive rooftop space to generate sustainable electricity. Our task was to design and install a bespoke renewable energy system that would maximise sunlight capture, help the environment and offer significant long-term savings.
Methodology
The project commenced with a detailed survey of the rooftop, conducted in collaboration with CMP Properties. The survey enabled us to assess the suitability of the roof and identify the optimal location for the solar array. Based on the survey, we designed a customised solar system comprising 153 x 420W solar modules, resulting in a total capacity of 64.26kW. The system was tailored to the specific needs of the client, with the panels strategically positioned on the south east facing roof to optimise sunlight exposure throughout the day.
Installation
We opted for a rail-less mounting system on the corrugated metal roof which allowed for secure attachment of the panels without compromising the roof’s integrity. Each mounting point was meticulously positioned to ensure stability and safety, particularly in avoiding the twelve roof lights that provided natural daylight to the interior of the building.
Working at height presented additional challenges, which we addressed by adhering strictly to health and safety protocols. Scaffolding was erected around the perimeter of the roof, and our team was equipped with the necessary safety gear. Our commitment to safety is always paramount, ensuring that all procedures are followed meticulously throughout every installation process.
After securely mounting the 153 solar panels, the team wired the system to the inverters and conducted comprehensive testing to verify its functionality and efficiency.
Outcome
The completed solar installation performed as expected and has delivered significant energy savings. The client was delighted with the outcome, particularly impressed by the seamless integration of the solar panels with the existing roof structure. This project highlights the enormous potential of underutilised commercial rooftop spaces for sustainable energy production. By converting these spaces into productive energy sources, businesses can contribute to environmental sustainability while achieving substantial cost savings over time.
