Introduction
A forward-thinking approach to sustainable energy was recently realised in the picturesque market town of Denbigh, nestled within Denbighshire. Working closely with the client, we took on a project to improve the energy efficiency of a set of four apartments. After careful evaluation of the site, the decision was made to install a ground-mounted solar array instead of conventional roof-mounted panels.
Methodology
The project began with a thorough site survey, examining various important aspects of the deployment of solar panels. We focussed on ensuring access to sunlight and minimising shadows, and the best location was identified in the back garden. An 8-panel array was designed to capture ample sunlight, strategically positioned away from the buildings. An underground cabling system would need to be implemented to connect the solar infrastructure with the apartments. Each apartment would be equipped with a 700-watt Solis inverter, providing residents with access to 840 watts of clean and renewable energy.
The bespoke racking system and precise panel angling would ensure optimal light absorption. Unlike conventional roof-mounted systems constrained by the pitch of the roof, our ground-mounted approach allowed for accurate alignment, further enhancing energy yield. Notably, the decision to position the panels on the ground simplified maintenance, enabling the owner to easily clear snow and debris, a task made significantly simpler compared to the roof-mounted alternative.
Installation
With careful planning, our team completed the installation phase successfully. We assembled and positioned the ground-mounted solar array with precise alignment to ensure optimal performance. We also laid, buried and tested the cabling between the panels and apartments to guarantee seamless connectivity.
Outcome
Our hard work paid off and we completed the installation without any issues, satisfying both the owner and the residents. The client was extremely happy with the new installation, praising its seamless integration and attractive appearance. As for the residents, the switch to carbon-free electricity marked a new era of sustainability and cost-effectiveness. With a reliable and efficient solar array now in place, the apartments serve as an example of eco-conscious living, demonstrating the potential of modern renewable energy solutions across North Wales.
