Introduction
Recently, our team completed a ground-mounted solar panel installation for a client in St Asaph, North Wales. The client wanted to utilise an area of unused land on their property to enhance their energy self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on grid electricity. Unlike rooftop systems, ground-mounted installations are not constrained by roof shape or angle. This flexibility allowed our team to design a system at the optimal angle and orientation, maximising electricity production. This approach not only increases energy yield but also shortens the payback period for the investment, making it an attractive solution for sustainable energy generation.
Methodology
Following an initial site survey, our in-house experts assessed the suitability of the designated land for solar panel installation. Based on the findings, we designed an 11.7kW system comprising 27 high-efficiency 435-watt ground-mounted solar panels. Using advanced modelling tools, we accurately predicted the energy output and financial return of the system, ensuring the client had a clear understanding of its benefits and payback period.
Installation
The installation process was seamless and efficient, largely due to the ground-mounted nature of the system, which eliminated the need for working at height. The solar array was carefully positioned at the optimal tilt and orientation to maximise energy production throughout the year. Additionally, the ground-level placement simplifies future maintenance, as the panels are easily accessible for cleaning and servicing without specialised equipment.
Outcome
From the moment the system was activated, it began generating clean, renewable energy. By repurposing underutilised land, the project demonstrates the potential of ground-mounted solar systems as an alternative to rooftop installations. This solution is particularly suitable for properties with complex roof designs, such as those with dormer windows, which may limit solar panel placement.
The client is now enjoying significant savings on electricity costs, with the system providing a reliable source of free energy after the initial payback period. The installation has proven to be a great success, contributing to the client’s energy independence while reducing their environmental impact.
This project underscores the versatility and effectiveness of ground-mounted solar solutions in achieving energy sustainability while making optimal use of available resources.
