100kw Solar PV Installation At Llandrillo College, North Wales

In 2020, JM Renewable Solutions Ltd (JMRS) were appointed as the main contractor by Grwp Llandrillo Menai, one of the largest educational groups in Wales with multiple sites across the country. The project consisted of installing a 100KW solar PV system at one of their larger sites in Rhos On Sea, North Wales.

At the tendering stage, JMRS were required to design and present a system that would benefit the college both economically and environmentally.

By using the electrical usage data, it was decided a 100KW solar PV array would provide the college with sufficient energy savings and minimise the amount being exported to grid. Before installing, JMRS organised and received a roof structural assessment by a local surveyor, which determined that the roof would take the additional weight of the solar PV system, consisting of 353nr panels.

The PV array was installed onto a large sports hall roof (flat roof) with cables feeding into a designated plant room where the 2nr 50 KW inverters and generation meter were to be situated.

Due to the site being located on the North Wales coastline the roof is susceptible to Gulls and pigeons nesting and fouling all over the solar panels. This could severely impact the electricity generated by the solar panels. Therefore, JMRS were required to suggest a solution to protect the panels and accessory equipment. It was decided that a full roof netting system was the most viable solution. JMRS were also responsible for managing the sub-contractors onsite and ensuring they adhered to the H&S standards- scaffolding, crane hire and structural surveyor.

Duration and Value

The project took a combined 4 weeks to complete and there were a few unforeseeable delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic but JMRS adapted and developed a strategy to adhere to new policies and meet the new deadlines.
